Advisor: Mr. Nicolò Doglioni, Geologist Project Description:
Rockfall protection of the motorway Salerno Reggio – km 425. After the collapse of 1200 m3 of rock from a cliff of a wide slope, the motorway was hit by several boulders. The largest one was 8 m3. The administration asked for a very fast and cheap temporary remedial solution. The geomechanical survey pointed out that on the detachment area there was furthermore 1000 m3 unstable rock mass. The interventions have been organized with the following order: (a) temporary barrier by the highway with two levels of containers filled of sands; (b) drape the unstable cliff by using HEA cable panels aimed to protect the work yard, and wrapping the possible rockfall around and then reduce their energy; (c) primary rockfall barrier line to catch the large multiple impact; (d) subsidiary rockfall line, to be placed just below the main one. The installed remedial measures were effective and protected the motorway from the second foreseen collapse of 1000 m3.Activities Performed:
Geo mechanical survey, stability rock fall analysis, definition of the hazard
Designing of rock fall barrier and of consolidation intervention.
